NATIONAL BIBLE MONTH/WEEK

As volunteers for the Philippine Bible Society and part of its Inter-Church Consultative Advisory Group, Pastors John and Myra Jalique were chosen to be coordinators for the National Bible Month/Week provincial-wide celebrations in Pangasinan.

The Philippine Bible Society has endeavored to introduce people to the Bible’s transforming power through all means possible.  One such means is the celebration of the National Bible Week (NBW).  The country has been celebrating NBW and National Bible Sunday annually since former President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Presidential Proclamation No. 2242 on November 19, 1982 declaring that “it is fitting and proper that national attention be focused on the important role being played by reading and study of the Bible in molding the moral fiber of our society.”

The celebration in January came about during the term of President Corazon C. Aquino who issued Proclamation No. 44 in 1986, which transferred and made official the NBW celebration in the first month of the year.  The proclamation was also reinforced by President Fidel V. Ramos in PP 1067.  These proclamations recognize the Bible as “an excellent source of principles for moral and personal discipline,” and designate the last week of January as National Bible Week, culminating on the month’s last Sunday as the National Bible Sunday.

Now, the Philippines is blessed to be the first among nations to celebrate National Bible Month.  President Rodrigo Duterte has declared January of every year as “National Bible Month” in recognition of the “religious nature of the Filipino people and the elevating influence of religion in human society. Proclamation No. 124 dated Jan. 5, 2017 also sets every last week of January as “National Bible Week.”

Pangasinan Celebration

The province has been celebrating NBW interspersedly for many years. But immediately after the commemoration of the Centennial Year of the Pangasinan Bible on November 7, 2015, which Pastors John and Myra helped coordinate with the Philippine Bible Society, a provincial ordinance declaring and celebrating last week of January of every year thereafter as the Provincial Bible Week was authored by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim and approved by former Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr.  on November 9, 2015.

On November 29, 2016, the incumbent Governor Amado I. Espino III signed a letter circular addressing all municipal and city mayors of the province and all division superintendents of the Department of Education in the province of Pangasinan referencing the Provincial Ordinance, wherein the Provincial Government of Pangasinan in coordination with all Bible-believing organizations and churches in the province shall conduct activities in celebration and participation in the week-long event of the National Bible Week.
